Why True PDF-to-PSD Conversion Isn't Possible
When a designer exports a PSD to PDF, Photoshop flattens the entire layer structure into the PDF format. The individual layers, adjustment layers, masks, smart objects, blending modes, and text layers are all merged into the final visual output. The PDF stores what the design looks like, not how it was built.
This means there is no lossless way to reconstruct the original PSD layers from a PDF. Any tool claiming to do so is either rasterising the PDF into a flat image layer (not true layer reconstruction) or misrepresenting what it does.
Client-side tools like ours use JavaScript to process files in your browser. We can render the visual content of a PSD, but we have no access to proprietary Photoshop layer data stored inside a PDF — and even if we did, rebuilding the original layer hierarchy would be technically impossible from a flattened document.
What You Can Do Instead
Open PDF in Photoshop
The closest thing to PDF-to-PSD: open the PDF in Photoshop (File > Open). Photoshop imports each PDF page as a rasterised flat layer at your chosen resolution. You can then edit it as a normal Photoshop document — but the original layer structure is gone.
Open PDF in GIMP (Free)
GIMP is a free, open-source image editor that can open PDF files and import pages as flat layers. Not as feature-rich as Photoshop, but completely free.
Use Adobe Acrobat's Edit Mode
If you need to edit text or images within the PDF without converting to PSD, Adobe Acrobat Pro has limited editing tools that can modify elements directly in the PDF format.
Recover the Original PSD
If you or your team originally created the design, look for the original .psd file in your project folder, cloud storage, or version control. This is always the best option — no conversion needed.
Re-create in Figma or Adobe XD
For UI design workflows, Figma (free tier available) can import a PDF as a static image and serve as your working design file going forward.
Adobe Photoshop (Official)
